What to text your ex after no contact: the first message that doesn't sound like a plan

What to text your ex after no contact: short, light, specific and about something real, with no heavy question. Examples that work and ones that don't.

The best first message looks like it took ten seconds to write and could have come from anyone. That is why it works.
Short answer

After no contact, send one short, light, specific message about something real, with no question that needs a serious answer. Do not mention the breakup, your feelings or your changes. Send it mid-week in the early evening, sober, then put the phone away and end any chat first.

Keep it short, light and specific, about something real, with no question that demands a serious answer. Then put the phone down. That is the whole first message.

The trap is trying to make it do too much. A first message is not the place to explain what you have learned, ask where you stand or hint at a plan. Its only job is to be easy to answer and impossible to feel pressured by.

Are you ready to send a first message?

Before you type, run the readiness test. All five answers must be yes.

Have you done thirty full days of silence? Can you describe what you changed in concrete terms, with evidence, without mentioning her? Would you be genuinely okay if she did not reply? Do you want her, or do you want to stop feeling rejected? Are you prepared to walk away cleanly if she says no?

If any of those is a "no," you are not late. You are early. Keep going with the daily work, and look at whether silence is doing its job before you try again.

What does a good first message look like?

A good first message has four traits.

  • Light. No weight, no feelings, no history.
  • Specific. A detail, not "hey, how are you?"
  • Real. About something that actually happened or that she would genuinely care about.
  • Easy to answer. She can reply with one word, or not reply, and neither costs her anything.

It never mentions the relationship, the breakup, your feelings or the ways you have changed. It is under four lines. And it ends on you, not on a demand.

Here are some examples I would be happy to see a man send. Do not copy them word for word. She can tell a script from a man.

  • "Walked past the old climbing gym and they've finally replaced that terrible sign. Hope you're good."
  • "That documentary you kept recommending is on streaming now. Got halfway. You were right about the ending, I hate it."
  • "The band you like is playing in the city in March. Tickets go on sale Friday, in case you hadn't seen."
  • "Found your favourite noodle place has moved two streets over. Same menu. Thought you'd want to know."

Each one is true, takes ten seconds to read and asks for nothing. None of them could be mistaken for a plan.

Here is how a draft improves. The first version: "Hey, it's been a month, I hope you're doing well and I just wanted to say I've been thinking about things." Cut the opener, the check-in and the "thinking about things," and nothing is left. So find the detail. What did you see, do or hear this week that she would care about? The second version: "Saw they've finally reopened the pier cafe. Still no oat milk, apparently. Hope you're good." It takes ten seconds to read, and it gives her a way to answer if she wants one.

Which first messages fail?

Almost every bad first message fails in the same way. It hands her work. Here is what a few of them sound like on her end.

What you sendWhat she hearsA better version
"Hey, how are you?""Do the work of guessing what I want."A specific detail from your day.
"I've changed a lot. Can we talk?""An announcement, plus a demand."Say nothing. Show it when you meet.
"I've been thinking about us.""The relationship conversation is open again."Something small and real.
"Hope this isn't weird.""This is weird."Just send the message, no preamble.
"Did you get my message?""Pressure, and a second attempt."Nothing. Wait.

If you notice a "please," a "just" or an "I can't," or a mention of another woman, delete the draft. The same goes for anything you would not send if you knew she would show it to her best friend.

When should you send it?

After thirty days, mid-week, early evening. Never after 10 p.m. and never after a drink.

There is a recent study on timing, and it is worth knowing what it can and cannot tell you. In 2026, Teichmann and colleagues published a study in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships on texting after a first date. Waiting had a U-shaped effect: replying the next morning beat both replying immediately and waiting two days (Teichmann et al., 2026).

That is a first-date study, not a breakup study, so I do not treat it as a rule for you. The idea I take from it is simple. Rushing and playing games with the clock both read as strategy. Be a man with a life: you reply when you are free, not in seconds and not after days of deliberate delay.

One last point. Day 30 is a floor, not a signal. The readiness test decides when, not the calendar.

What do you do with each kind of reply?

Decide this before you send, so you are not deciding with your heart in your throat.

She replies warmly

Match her energy and do not exceed it. Keep the exchange short, three to six messages, and end it first, on a high. Leave two or three days. Then send a second light message.

On the second or third conversation, suggest something low-pressure and specific: a coffee, a walk, a drink after work. "Fancy a coffee Thursday? I'll be near yours around six. No big deal if not." The next steps are in how to reconnect with an ex.

She replies coldly, or not at all

No reply within a week is a reply. A short, flat answer is a reply. In both cases you do nothing. No follow-up, no "did you get my message," no second attempt for at least three weeks.

Then one more light message. If that gets nothing, you have your answer, and the work now is yourself. A man who sends four unanswered messages has told her everything she needed to know about whether he changed.

She asks what you are up to

This is the test the whole month was for. Give a real answer in one sentence: a training goal, a project, a trip. Then ask something about her. Do not turn it into a presentation, and do not mention the breakup. If you do not have a real answer yet, you were not ready to send the message in the first place.

She asks to be friends

Do not say yes just to stay near her. That is the friend trap: you answer within seconds, you listen to her about her day, and you become her support with none of the benefits. I wrote about why in what to do when she wants to be friends.

She wants to talk about "us"

Not by text. If she raises it, keep your tone warm and do not litigate the past. The conversation about us belongs in person, usually on the second or third meeting, and ideally she raises it first.

Where do you find the exact words?

The Scripts Pack that comes with the 30-day protocol has the first message, the replies if she texts you during silence, and the script for the "us" conversation. Personalise every one of them.

Remember that nobody can promise a reply, or what it will say. You control what you send and how you carry yourself afterwards.

The ALPHA RESET rules, page 7 of the protocol
Page 7 of the protocol: the five rules every man follows for 30 days — no contact you haven't earned, daily work, no games, measure against yesterday, build a life you'd keep.

Rule three on page 7 applies directly to your first message: no lying, pressure, guilt-tripping, monitoring or games. If you are not sure you are ready, the Reset Score test asks eight questions and tells you where you stand.

Questions men ask

How long should I wait before texting my ex after no contact?

Thirty days is the minimum, and the readiness test matters more than the number. If you can honestly say you would be fine if she never replied, you are closer to ready.

What if she doesn't reply to my first message?

Treat silence as an answer. Do nothing for at least three weeks, then send one more light message. If that gets no reply either, you have your answer, and you carry on with your own life.

Should I text my ex on her birthday after no contact?

A birthday can be a natural hook, but only after thirty days, only if you pass the readiness test, and only as a light message. During the thirty days it is a no, even for "happy birthday."

Should I ask to meet in the first message?

No. The first message opens a door and nothing more. Suggest something low-pressure and specific on the second or third conversation, once she has shown she is happy to talk.
