Should I text my ex girlfriend? A decision tree for tonight
Should I text my ex girlfriend? Answer five questions before you press send. Most nights the answer is no, and here is what to do instead.

Probably not tonight. If it has been under thirty days, if you want relief or reassurance from her reply, or if it is late or you have been drinking, do not send it. Work through the five questions below, and use the 2 a.m. Relapse Protocol instead.
Probably not tonight. If it has been less than thirty days since the breakup, or what you want from her reply is relief, do not send it. The only texts worth sending are the ones you could live with her never answering.
That is not a rule to punish you. It is the cheapest way to protect the version of you she will meet in a month. Here is how to decide, step by step.
How do you decide whether to text her?
Work through these five questions in order. Stop at the first "no, don't send."
- How long since the breakup? Under thirty days: stop here. The answer is no, unless it is logistics (children, a shared lease, returning belongings). Then keep it short, friendly and boring. Thirty days or more: go to question 2.
- Who ended it, and how did it end? If she ended it and you begged, argued or left things in chaos, one short closing message may be allowed (the silence guide covers it). If it ended calmly, you probably owe her nothing. Go to question 3.
- What would you actually send? Read the draft out loud. Does it contain "please," "just" or "I can't"? Is it longer than four lines? Does it ask how she feels about you? Does it mention another woman? Any yes: delete it.
- What do you want from the reply? Be honest. If the answer is relief, reassurance, an answer to "do you miss me?" or proof that she still cares, you are asking her to fix your night. Do not send. If you could shrug and carry on with your day without a reply, go to question 5.
- Is it before 10 p.m., and have you been sober all evening? If not, save the draft in a notebook and look at it tomorrow. If yes, you are close to a real first message. Read what to text your ex after no contact before you write a word.
Notice how few messages survive all five. That is the point. In my experience, a man who gets through question 4 honestly usually finds he no longer needs to send anything tonight.
Why do 2 a.m. texts never read the way they felt?
Because you and she are not in the same state. You write at the peak of the feeling. She reads in the morning, with coffee, a day ahead of her and no context for your night. Same words, different weather.
There is also a reason you feel so sure at that hour. In a 2010 study in the Journal of Neurophysiology, Fisher and colleagues found that looking at a photo of the person who had rejected them activated reward and craving circuits similar to those seen in addiction (Fisher et al., 2010). Your brain is not giving you advice. It is asking for a dose.
A paper in Behaviour Research and Therapy points the same way. Anxious attachment goes with rumination, distress and an automatic pull toward the ex-partner (attachment and approach bias). That pull is real, and it is not a sign that the text is a good idea.
Last, the relief does not last. You feel lighter for a few minutes after you press send. Then the message is out there, and you are watching your phone. The men I coach describe that second part as worse than the original night.
What should you do at 2 a.m. instead?
The 2 a.m. Relapse Protocol is one of the bonuses that comes with the 30-day protocol, and it exists for exactly this hour. Here are the basics, so you have something tonight.
- Write the message anyway, in a notebook, not in your phone. The notebook can take it. She can't.
- Put the phone out of reach. Another room, charger in the hall. The extra thirty seconds of effort is the point.
- Move your body. Press-ups, a walk, a cold shower. You are burning off an anxiety that would otherwise turn into a text.
- Decide nothing after 9 p.m. Anything that still feels urgent tomorrow can be looked at tomorrow.
- Re-read the five rules. They are on page 7, further down this page.
If a bad night starts to feel like more than a bad night, or the drinking is part of it, talk to a professional or call a local helpline. That is not weakness. It is the sensible move.
If you are not sure what to do tonight in particular, what to do after a breakup tonight walks through the first hours.
Why does texting her more push her further away?
It comes down to a pattern the Gottman Institute calls the pursuer–distancer dynamic: the more one partner pursues, the more the other withdraws (Gottman Institute). You text. She goes quiet. You text again, because the quiet feels unbearable. She goes quieter.
In that picture, you are the pursuer, and every message is more pursuit. The begging, the long emotional message and the checking of her profile are the same behaviour in different outfits. I go through each of them in the seven mistakes after a breakup.
The way out is to stop pursuing. It also gives her room, which may or may not change her mind. Either way, it is the only version of this where you keep your dignity.

Page 7 is a good thing to read before you pick up the phone. Rule one is about contact. Rule three, never lying, pressuring, guilt-tripping, monitoring or playing games, rules out most of what we want to send at night.
What if you already sent it?
Do not send a second message to fix the first. Do not explain, apologise for the apology, or ask if she got it. Put the phone down. The next move is silence, and the best thing you can do about a message you regret is to make the following month so quiet and so different that it looks like the last gasp of a man who is gone.
If what you sent was a long plea, what to do after you begged your ex to stay covers the repair. If you want to know where you stand, the Reset Score test asks eight questions and tells you your situation and the first thing to do tonight. No email is needed to see the result.
Questions men ask
Is it ever okay to text my ex girlfriend?
Yes, in three cases. For real logistics like children, a lease or belongings, kept short and friendly. In reply, if she texts you first. And as a deliberate first message after thirty days, once you can answer the readiness questions honestly.
Should I text my ex when I miss her?
No. Missing her is a feeling, and a text is a request for her to deal with it. Write it in a notebook, train, and speak to a friend. If you still want to send it after thirty days and a clear head, that is a different conversation.
What should I do if my ex texts me first?
Reply the same day, not the same minute. Two or three warm, friendly lines, no questions, and don't reopen the relationship conversation. End it first, then go back to silence.
What time of day is worst to text an ex?
After 10 p.m. and after a drink. Those are the two windows where your judgement is weakest and her reading of your message is least charitable. If you must send something, do it in daylight, sober, mid-week.
Stop guessing. Follow the plan.
