How to reconnect with an ex girlfriend after months, without the essay
How to reconnect with an ex after months: whether you're ready, what a first message says, when to send it, and what to do if the answer is no.

You reconnect with an ex by sending one short, light message about something real, after you've done the work. Before that, it's just a late text. Keep it under four lines, end the conversation first, and keep the "us" talk for much later, in person.
You reconnect with an ex by sending one short, light message about something real, once you've done the work. Without the work, it's just a late text with the same man behind it. The message is easy to write. Being a man who can hear "no" and be fine is the part that takes months.
Are you ready to reconnect?
Not "do I miss her?" You will, probably for a long time. The question is whether you can hear a no.
Day 30 of silence gives you a better question than the one you had on day one: do I want her back, or did I just want to stop hurting? The man who's ready can answer, "I'd be fine without her, and I'd still choose her."
Here are the checks I use with the men I coach:
- You've held silence for 30 days, and you haven't checked her profiles this week.
- You can explain why she left, including your part, in two sentences with no blame in them.
- Your week is full without her: training, a mission, friends.
- You can picture her saying no and your day still working.
The second check matters most. Why did she leave me? helps you read it straight. If you can't name your part, you'll repeat it, and she'll recognise it within an hour.

One caution about the pull you feel. In a study in Behaviour Research and Therapy, researchers found that anxious attachment goes with rumination, distress and an automatic pull toward the ex. So the urge to message her is a poor test of readiness. It shows up whether you're ready or not.
If you're unsure where you stand, the Reset Score test asks eight questions and tells you.
What should the first message say?
Almost nothing. It has one job: to be easy to answer and impossible to feel pressured by.
So it is short, light, specific and warm. It doesn't mention the relationship, the breakup, your feelings or the ways you've changed. It points at something real: a shared memory, something she'd find funny, something useful to her. It has no question that demands a serious answer.
| First message | What it does |
|---|---|
| "I've changed a lot, I'd love you to see it." | A status report. She has to judge it. |
| "Can we talk about us?" | Opens the heavy conversation by text. |
| "Hey, how are you?" | Gives her nothing to answer. |
| "Walked past the place with the terrible sign. They finally fixed it. Hope you're good." | Real, light, no pressure. |
| "[Band she likes] announced a date in March. Thought you'd want to know before it sells out." | Useful, specific, easy to reply to. |
I'd add a short list of messages that never get sent. Nothing after 10 p.m. or after a drink. Nothing over four lines. Nothing with "please", "just" or "I can't". Nothing that asks how she feels about you. Nothing that mentions another woman.
The full wording is in the Scripts Pack that comes with the 30-day protocol, but you don't need a script. You need to stay short and mean it.
When should you send it?
After the 30 days, mid-week, early evening. Not late at night, not after drinking. Then put the phone down and go train.
The research on timing is thin, and I don't want to overclaim it. A 2026 study in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships by Teichmann and colleagues looked at texting after a first date and found a U-shaped effect: replying the next morning beat both replying immediately and waiting two days.
That's a first-date study, not a breakup study, so it doesn't prove anything about exes. What it suggests is that neither eagerness nor distance reads best. A gap that looks natural beats both extremes. When she answers, reply the same day, not the same minute.
What if she writes first, during the 30 days? Reply the same day, not the same minute, with two or three friendly lines, and end the conversation first. Don't treat it as a victory, and don't pour your heart out. Then go back to silence. You aren't done yet, and thirty days means thirty days.
If you're tempted to send something earlier, should I text my ex girlfriend? is worth reading first. If you want actual wording, what to text your ex after no contact has examples.
What happens after she replies?
Match her energy and don't exceed it. If she sends two warm lines, you send two warm lines.
Keep the exchange short, three to six messages, and end it first, on a high. Then leave two or three days before a second light message.
After the second or third exchange, suggest something low-pressure and specific: a coffee, a walk, a drink after work. "Fancy a coffee Thursday? I'll be near yours around six. No big deal if not." It should be clear, confident and easy to say no to.
If she says yes, keep the first meeting under 90 minutes. Don't bring up the relationship. If she does, listen, acknowledge and don't litigate: "Yeah. You were right about a lot of that." Talk about your life in a sentence, then ask about hers. End it first: "This was nice. I've got to get going, let's do it again." Then go.
When do you have the "us" conversation?
Much later, and only in person. Not by text, not at the first coffee, not on the second.
A man who rushes to "so are we back together?" is asking her to carry his anxiety. The better move is to date her again, properly. Plan things, lead, be the man from the early months with the maturity you have now. Don't rush into living together or joint plans.
Dating her again means doing the things you did in the first months: planning evenings, leading, keeping your own friends and your own training nights. She has her own life too, and you protect both. The Second Chance chapter of the protocol covers the first 90 days. The principle is simple: everything you built in the 30 days stays. If she becomes your whole world again, you're on the road to the same verdict.
If she's already seeing someone, the picture changes. Ex girlfriend has a new boyfriend goes through it.
What if she says no, or doesn't answer?
No reply within a week is a reply. A short, flat answer is a reply too. In both cases you do nothing.
No follow-up, no "did you get my message", no second try for at least three weeks. Then one more light message. If that gets nothing, you have your answer.
A man who sends four unanswered messages tells her everything she needed to know about whether he changed.
If she says no outright, the reply is brief and kind: "I understand, and I respect it. Thank you for being straight with me. I genuinely wish you well." Then silence. Chapter 10 of the protocol is written for this moment, and it's the one I'd read first if I could only read one.
There's a statistic that helps, with the right caveat. In a 2009 study in Personal Relationships, Dailey and colleagues found that around 40 to 50 percent of people have reconciled with an ex at least once. So it happens often enough to be worth trying. It also means plenty of people don't, and nobody can tell you which group you're in. Will my ex girlfriend come back? takes that question seriously.
The protocol promises two things: you'll stop making it worse and become a man worth coming back to, and you'll be fine either way. If a no arrives, give it sixty days of continued work before you make any big decision. Keep training, keep the mission, keep your friends. The weeks do the rest.
Questions men ask
How long should I wait before reconnecting with my ex?
After at least 30 days of real silence, and only when you can hear a no. The date matters less than the state. If you're still checking her profiles or hoping for a particular answer, you're not ready yet.
What should my first text to my ex say?
Something short, light and real, with no mention of the breakup or your feelings. A shared memory, a useful tip or a joke she'd get. No question that needs a serious answer.
Should I tell her I've changed?
No. Showing it beats saying it. Talk about your life in a sentence when she asks, then turn the question back to her. A long account of how you've changed is another essay.
What if she doesn't reply?
Do nothing for at least three weeks, then send one more light message. If that gets no reply either, take it as your answer and put the energy back into your own life.
Stop guessing. Follow the plan.
