Nobody can hand you a date. What you can see is the week you are in, and the next one.
Short answer

There is no honest average for how long a man takes to get over a breakup, because it depends on what he does with the time. In my experience it runs from shock in week one, through a dip, to the first good days around weeks four to six. Doing the work shortens it; checking her profile drags it out.

There is no honest number. Anyone who gives you an average is guessing, and I won't. What I can give you is the pattern I have seen over ten years of coaching men through this, and the things that make it shorter or longer.

The clock does not start the day she leaves. It starts the day you stop feeding it.

Is there an average time to get over a breakup?

No, and the reason matters. Time passing is not the variable. What you do with it is. Two men can sit at week six and be in completely different places: one has trained, worked and kept his silence, and the other has checked her profile every night.

You will hear that men don't get over a breakup faster, they get over it later, because many of us skip the feeling and bury it in work or drinking. It is a common belief, and it matches some of what I see in the men I coach. I am not going to dress it up as a fact.

The early weeks do feel like withdrawal, and there is a reason. In a 2010 study in the Journal of Neurophysiology, Fisher and colleagues found that looking at a photo of the ex who rejected them activated reward and craving circuits similar to addiction (source). Every time you check her stories, you give that circuit a fresh hit.

In my experience, three things move the timeline more than anything else. How much contact you keep with her or her profiles. Whether you run a daily routine that does not depend on your mood. Whether you spend real time with other people. All three are in your hands starting tonight, and none of them requires her to do anything.

What does a realistic timeline look like, week by week?

These are the phases I see most often. Individual men run ahead of this or behind it. Use it as a map, not a deadline.

PhaseWhat it feels likeWhat helpsWhat drags it out
Week 1Shock. A constant urge to fix it, text her, explainOne closing message at most, muting her, training, two friends in the loopBegging, the long message, checking her profiles
Weeks 2 and 3The dip. Anger, replaying, the 2 a.m. nightsThe 15-minute morning routine, a mission with a finish line, sleepDrinking to sleep, staying home, rebounding to prove a point
Weeks 4 to 6The first good hours, then whole daysMore of the same, plus real plans with friendsReopening contact in a weak moment, tests of whether she still cares
After thatYou can think of her without a spikeA life that is yours, a direction, a standard you keepWaiting for her answer before deciding how you feel

What happens in week 1?

Shock, and a loud urge to fix it. You will want to explain, apologise, argue or plead, because it feels as though the right sentence exists and you just haven't found it.

It doesn't. Almost no breakup is a single event. It is a verdict she reached weeks before the conversation where she said it. You are meeting the news on day one. She met it a long time ago, which is why you feel so far behind her.

The four verdicts, page 9 of the protocol
Page 9: breakups are almost never events. They're verdicts, reached weeks before the conversation where she said it, which is why you are catching up emotionally while she is already further along.

This is the week to stop the damage. In the 30-day protocol, day one is the closing message if you need it, muting her everywhere, deleting drafts, and training. By day two you have told two friends. By day three you have picked a mission with a finish line. If you have already begged, I begged my ex to stay is the place to start, and the seven mistakes men make after a breakup will keep you out of the rest.

Why do weeks 2 and 3 feel worse than week 1?

Because the adrenaline wears off. In week one you are running on shock, and shock is strangely busy. By week two the news has landed and the days are quiet.

This is the dip. In my experience, anger often turns up here too, and the 2 a.m. nights are at their worst. You will remember things she did. That is useful. Anger has energy in it, so pour it into the gym and the mission, not into a message.

Make no decisions after 9 p.m. Quitting the job, selling the flat, sending the message: every one of them looks different at nine the next morning. Sleep is not a luxury in these weeks. It is the cheapest thing you can do to shorten the dip.

This is also where the daily work starts to matter. The 15-minute morning routine runs from about day nine in the calendar: no phone for the first 30 minutes, three lines in a notebook, two minutes of stillness. It will feel too small to matter. Do it anyway. How to stop thinking about your ex girlfriend covers the routine and the 2 a.m. plan in full.

If you want the whole day-by-day structure for these weeks, the 30-day protocol lays it out.

When do the good days start?

Usually somewhere between weeks four and six, and they arrive quietly. First an hour passes without her in it. Then an afternoon. Then you realise you laughed at something and did not feel guilty.

You may feel guilty anyway. Don't. This is what a man with a life feels like.

Two things tend to happen around now. First, you start to notice other people noticing you, because you look and move differently. Training, a haircut and a better routine will do that, and the glow-up guide for men after a breakup shows the practical side. Second, you can finally ask the question you could not answer on day one: do I want her, or do I just want the pain to stop?

The 30-day mark is a decision point, not a finish line. Reconnect or continue. Either is a win. Whether she is open to reconnecting is not in your hands, and will your ex girlfriend come back takes that question seriously.

When are you actually over her?

Not on a date. It is a test, and you can run it on yourself.

You can think about her without a spike in your chest. You would be fine if she never texted again. When someone asks "what are you up to?" you have a real answer, one that has nothing to do with her. And if she did reach out, you would reply warmly and calmly, with no rush and no agenda.

That is the version of you that does not need her to be fine. The protocol is built to get you there, whether or not she ever comes back. Nobody can guarantee she does. You control you, and that is the part that lasts.

Not sure which phase you are in? The Reset Score test asks eight questions and tells you the first thing to do tonight. If you have a few days where you cannot eat, sleep or work, or you are drinking heavily to get through, talk to a professional or a local helpline. That is more than a normal bad stretch, and you should not carry it alone.

Questions men ask

Do guys get over breakups faster than girls?

You will often hear that men get over a breakup later, not faster, and it matches some of what I see. I won't turn it into a rule. Speed has more to do with what you do each day than with whether you are a man or a woman. Men who work, train and keep their silence move; men who check and wait do not.

Why do I feel worse after two weeks than I did at the start?

Because the shock has worn off and the news has landed. Week one runs on adrenaline. Weeks two and three are quieter, which is why the dip hits so hard. In my experience, it is a phase, and it lifts faster when you keep your routine instead of waiting to feel ready.

Is 30 days enough to get over a breakup?

Thirty days is enough to stop making it worse and to start feeling different. It is not a finish line. Many of the men I coach have their first good days somewhere in weeks four to six. The protocol is built to leave you steady and clear-headed at day 30, not to erase her.

How do I know I am over my ex?

You can think of her without a spike, you would be fine if she never texted again, and your days have a direction that does not depend on her. If you still check her profile every night, you are not there yet. That is useful information, not a failure.
